It’s now been 5 days since our two Hedgehogs arrived for their winter vacation at Wild HQ. Our aim, to keep the hogs safe and warm until they can be released into the wild next spring. So what’s their winter retreat like?

The hedgehogs have individual cages , measuring about 600mm x 600mm x 1000mm or 24″ x 24″ x 36″. They both have their own food and water bowls and a nest made of torn newspaper. Apart from when they are weighed and cleaned this will be their home for the next three to four months. The cages are permanently covered with towels and are living in our spare lounge. The room is kept between 10c to 18c.

The bedding is changed daily and the hogs are fed twice a day . For the rest of the day the door to the room is shut and they can rest in total darkness and peace and quiet.
