The Hide – Fight or Flight

Yes , summer is here , well for a while anyway so I’m going to enjoy this glorious weather while it lasts. Actually it has been so nice we decided to treat ourselves to a few days away , the venue Brussels . A quick hop other to mainland Europe via the Eurostar train. It has been a few years since our last trip to Belgium , and i glad to report it still has all the charm I remember.

Anyway back to the meadow and the hide. After the hustle and bustle of a city break it’s always great to retreat to the meadow for a little peace and quiet. Well almost. At the back of the main pond there is an old tree stump , a favoured spot for the Grey Squirrels to sit and admire their small kingdom . However there is a turf war developing.

The Rat pack want the stump and a battle of wills is developing. And this has lead to confrontation between the two sets of rodents. All things came to a head with a Squirrel knocking a small rat of the stump and then from nowhere , one of the larger rats launched itself at the Squirrel . The result , 1-0 to the rat !

So apart from these feuding rodents , who else made today’s roll call. Keeping with the mammals we have a couple of Hares , a few Rabbits and in the distance a male Reeves Muntjac. In the sky’s above the hide we have both Buzzards and Red kites.

Then we have the birds , Robin’s , Wrens , Blue tits , Great tits , Dunnock , Chaffinch and Wood Pigeon. All in all a very entertaining day watching and occasionally photographing wildlife.
