With Thomas Orrin , Wildlife Photographer

On my travels up to Yorkshire over the summer I had countless encounters and one of my favourites came when I visited Studley royal deer park. With over 300 deer consisting of sika, fallow and red deer, this was definitely my favourite spot for photography in the North of Yorkshire.

During my first visit, I walked through the entrance and instantly spotted a pair of cygnets and a lot of Canada geese. My first deer spotting was actually made by my brother (he has no interest in wildlife at all) he found a herd of about 50 red deer. It was at this point I went off by myself towards the herd. At first I kept my distance and got some alright shots but it wasn’t until I got closer until I got closer when I got my favourite shot of the trip. Most of the deer were laying under the tree in the shade, all but one, this red deer buck was laying down in the sun and all of a sudden he let out an almighty roar. I was lucky enough to capture the moment and it has become my favourite shot yet.

We had to visit again and the second visit could have even been better. The evening started off with another herd of red deer and got a lot of photos when they were pulling faces whilst eating. Also, crows were picking ticks off of the deer’s back. Me and my parents were walking around the path and we found two large herds of sika and fallow deer either side of the path. I started taking some photos and videos, this was the first time I got a video I was actually happy with. After a while around 150 deer crossed in front of us. A combination of sika and fallow there was some fawn, this was the craziest experience I have ever seen.

As a whole, this is possibly my favourite encounter I have come across during my photography journey so far.
