Confession time, I’m a massive fan of this camera , it’s the mainstay of my kit bag and I regularly have two of these bodies in my camera bag. Lightweight and really solidly constructed it offers the perfect balance of performance and reliability. Boasting an impressive 45.0 megapixels, 20 frames per second , 8 stops of image stabilisation and capable of capturing full frame 8k raw video what’s not to like ?

The EOS R5 uses Canons advanced full frame 45MP CMOS sensor which enables the capture of stunning and detailed still photographs. Coupled with the all new DIGIC X processor it also delivers super sharp 8k video footage. Add in blisteringly fast 20 fps with the electronic shutter and 12 fps with the mechanical shutter you have a camera that enables you to capture every moment.

The camera uses Canons duel pixel CMOS autofocus technology, enabling ultra high speed autofocus corrections instantaneously. Coupled with the 20 frames per second it’s a formidable combination. It enables the camera to track faces , heads and eyes and most importantly for wildlife photography for the first time this now also works for animals and birds. And it actually works . Once locked on to a subject , all you need to do is keep the bird or animal in the frame. As a comparison Canons 6D has 11 focus points. The 5D Mark IV has 61 focus points. The R5 somewhat ups the ante, with 5,940 focus points! There are a range of other focus options, so you don’t have to rely on the subject detection autofocus system. You can also set up different buttons to trigger different autofocus methods, so you can have one button to lock onto eyes for example, and another for centre point focusing.

So should you splash the cash ? Absolutely, it’s a yes yes yes ! It has the feel of a DSLR , Lightweight and packed with features. This is a very capable camera that has the perfect combination of performance and ease of use. The ground breaking autofocus animal tracking is a game changer and worth the cost alone.
