Kit Bag – New Canon 35mm ef-s 2.8f macro lens

Canon’s new release , the EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Lens is the widest angle, smallest, lightest and least expensive EF-S-compatible macro lens in Canon’s current line up. As an EF-S lens, the 35 macro is only compatible with APS-C format EOS cameras. So if you own one of Canon’s full frame bodies this lens isn’t for you. The EF-S 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM Lens size and weight makes it a compact, easy-to-take-with-you lens and only a very small number of lenses are lighter or smaller.

This lens is targeted at entry level and amateur photographers, the build quality similar to other ef-s lenses and that is a positive attribute. The lens is not a weather-sealed lens and care should be taken when using in wet or dust conditions.

When working distances become short, lighting the subject becomes challenging and this lens incorporates some enhancements made to address this issue. First, the end of the lens is tapered to a much smaller diameter to avoid shading caused by the lens itself. And second, a pair of continuous, circular LED lights, referred to as “Macro Lites”, are positioned inside the front rim of the lens. Working in conjunction with the narrowed lens diameter, the LEDs add light on the subject. This lens does not have a battery, so expect the Macro Lites to have an impact on the camera’s battery life.

Should you find extra room in you kit bag for the addition of this lens, well the cost is as light as the lens itself and the usability factor for me is high. The image quality delivered by this lens is as good as Canon’s most-similar priced lenses, and personally i haven’t found it hard to justify the addition of this lens to my kit bag.
