REVIEW – CANON RF 100-500 LENS

My new go to lens the Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM , has been a permanent addition to my kit bag. The upgrade in focal length has made a real difference compared to my old 100-400mm and the lens has Canon’s L series legendary build quality 5-stop image stabilisation and advanced optics and unrivalled performance thanks to Super US and UD lens elements and ASC coatings for unbeatable contrast and sharpness. Outstanding weather sealing and heat-resistant white paint on the body protects against extreme temperatures. Dual Nano USM motors enable fast, smooth and near silent AF, making this a great lens for wildlife photography. These features come at a price in the form of weight gain . The 100-500 weights in at 1530g compared with 635g for the 100-400 lens. Can you shoot hand held , yes but for longer days some form of support might be required.

I have been using the 100-500 paired with an R5 body as my primary lens for the past few months and it has proved more than capable. As mentioned earlier it is considerably more heavier than my previous lens but as most of my photography is now hide based the extra weight does not cause any problems and it is still perfectly usable hand held.

It feels solidly made so i have absolutely no problem with the quality . I do have a couple of small niggles . If you intend to use an extender the lens is only compatable from 300 to 500 mm which isn’t ideal. The auto focus can sometimes struggle to lock on to your subject. One locked on it works just fine.

So as ever the question is would I recommend the lens. Unequivocally it’s a yes . Ok it’s heavier than my previous lens and it’s not cheap . However in my opinion Canon have produced another fantastic lens , and it’s definitely worth the investment if you can.
