CANON 18X50 IS ALL WEATHER

18×50 IS All Weather

These binoculars are not cheap and claim superior performance with a high powered 18x range suitable for use in all weather as the name would suggest. Made with Canon precision optics and optical Image Stabilizer for superbly sharp, steady, comfortable view in harsh conditions or marine environments or when your just stuck out in the open in our often unpredictable British weather. So do they live up to the price tag ?

We have had these binoculars for a couple of weeks field tests and first impressions are good . The rugged design offers a simple layout designed for prolonged use over long periods. The binoculars have a solid one piece body with adjustable eye pieces othering 15mm of adjustable eye relief. The eye pieces are of a roll down type and whilst they work , they are probably the weak point with these binoculars. Once adjusted correctly they work absolutely fine but i would certainly like to see a slight redesign here. That being said these binoculars have a solid feel when you hold them. They sit in your hands perfectly and all the focus controls and image stabilisation button seem to be just in the right place.

The large image stabilisation button , a game changer

Speaking of the image stabilisation , it offers remarkably steady images thanks to Canon’s Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, even with my shaky grip and is a real game changer. It counteracts a wide range of different types of shake and movement when viewing hand-held, or from moving vehicles or boats and it really does work . In fact the results are astonishing with your target subject crystal clear and in focus. These bright binoculars feature a large diameter 50mm front optic for a bright field-of-view. The result is an exceptionally viewing experience a the stabilisation makes the most of the powerful 18x magnification. I was able to pick out a pigeon in a tree a good 150 metres away and lock on to the bird with ease , an with mind blowing clarity. The binoculars are powered by two AA batteries , a little fiddly to replace in the field , you need a coin or screwdriver but honestly we only used one pair during the whole field test and the binoculars also come with a tripod mount point.

Battery opening and tripod mounting point

We used these Bino’s in some pretty harsh weather conditions including heavy rain and they coped really well , no problems at all thanks to weather resistance to JIS 4 specification. The rugged build quality features a rubber finish offering excellent grip and able to withstand the harshest conditions, making these binoculars ideal for heavy-duty use.

Spot your subject easily and experience a beautiful 60.3° apparent wide field of view with clear, flat, low distortion from edge to edge thanks to the porro II prism optics and doublet field flattener element. I think honestly these have to be the best binoculars i have ever used. You just have to try them yourself to understand the clarity.

So the big question , should you buy these binoculars . Well if you are going to splash the money the answer is a definite yes. They are on my Christmas list and i would recommend them without hesitation. Huge performance that is really usable thanks to the image stabilisation and offers a great viewing experience.
