THE HIDE

The Hide Thursday 23-12-21

It’s a bonus day today , my to-do list all ticked off so I’m rewarding myself with another day at the Meadow Hide. And I’m not that bothered that it’s really misty here with intermittent drizzly rain , it’s warm for this time of year , 8 c and very little wind so it actually feels rather pleasant here in the hide . Mind you I still have the blanket out , wrapped around me and a flask of rather lovely hot veggie soup to keep me warm !

With the feeders topped up it’s action stations. Today’s visitors to the hide include Long tailed tits . It’s good to see these colourful small birds back and today in large numbers. It’s the second time this week they have been spotted here at the hide and I think we had at least ten individuals feasting on the fat ball feeders.  The Red kites also made a welcome return , I guess we have taken their presence at the meadow for granted such has been the regularity over the past year.

Other visitors to the hide today included Blackbirds , Pigeon  , crow , Pheasant , Blue tit , Great tit , Marsh tit , Dunnock , Wren , Chaffinch , Goldfinch , Robin  , Great spotted woodpecker , Song thrush and Magpie. Mammals, Grey Squirrel and Bank vole.

It’s been a really good first year at the meadow . We knew that there was a good variety of wildlife here but honestly the number of different species filmed and recorded has exceeded all our expectations. Hopefully next year we will record all of our visitors throughout the year to better understand their habits and life cycle.

If you live in the U.K. you can get involved and help with next years Big Garden Birdwatch organised by the RSPB , taking place from the 28th to 30th January. And you don’t need to have access to a garden to take part . Click here for more details. Or if you have your own wildlife story to tell and fancy becoming a guest blogger here at Wildonline.blog please get in touch.

Finally as this is my last post before the festive holiday , on behalf of myself , Graham and Anne I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
