A Rubbish Blog

Is this a rubbish blog ?

words by Peter Hanscomb

Before i start , the title of this blog doesn’t refer to the quality ( or lack of quality ) of the content of this site , it’s all about litter , discarded containers , packaging and waste thrown by the side of roads , in hedgerows and on grass verges .

I have always believed in the little things we can all do . Leave a small section of your garden to grow wild. If you don’t have a garden plant a mini wild meadow in a pot. Or simply leave out a small container of fresh water overnight for wildlife to dehydrate.

Simple , zero cost , easy fixes to help our mother nature and improve our natural world. There is still an awful lot more we can do at very little cost , and at a local level to improve our environment not only for us humans but also for all the other living beings that share this planet with us.

One simple act is how we treat our waste , the rubbish left behind by our modern life. Litter is one of my biggest hates. How can we even start to think about recycling and re-using Earths resources if we can’t even place our old burger wrappers or plastic bottles in a bin. Even worse is when the rubbish is thrown from cars onto the verges or into hedgerows. It attracts wildlife , birds , squirrels , foxes and badgers and brings them into harms way. I think Joanna Lumley’s quote below sums up my feelings.

” the hand that comes out of a car and just drops litter in the street. I hate that ! For some reason, it just fills me with fury! It’s just utter laziness, lack of interest in other people, lack of interest in the planet, in the hedgehog who might eat the plastic bag, it’s a lack of concern.”

Joanna Lumley

During my childhood there was an emphasis on ” keeping Britain tidy” Is it time to revive our pride in local litter free estates , towns and cities . If not for our sake , for our wild animals that share the space with us ? Perhaps when we have managed to master the little changes , we can move on to the bigger environmental issues the world faces.

See it , bag it , bin it
