Say hello to Hedgehog number 179 , better known as Tina , one very lucky young lady. Tina was found wandering around our back garden this afternoon by my wife.
Tina is very small , probably one of the second litter this year and weighs only 230g , far to small to survive the winter . She was also very dehydrated, a common problem with Hedgehogs this time of the year.
The good news is Tina is now safe and sound at an excellent local Hedgehog rescue centre where she will spend the winter before being released next spring back into our back garden.
As a general rule , if you see a healthy full sized Hedgehog at this time of year out in daylight, it’s ok to leave it alone. If in doubt or its obviously to small it’s ok to help. Place the hedgehog in a safe tall box with an old towel for warmth, a little water and a small amount of cat food, and the seek help and advise from a local rescue centre.
